2-Day Marrakech to Fes Desert Tour itinerary:

Day 1: Marrakech → Atlas Mountains → Merzouga Desert

Approximate Driving Time: 9 Hours

Your Sahara express journey begins with a very early morning pickup (around 7:30 AM) from your accommodation in Marrakech. We have a long but spectacular day of driving ahead. Our route takes us up and over the magnificent High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, with brief stops for panoramic photos.

As we descend from the mountains, we will make a special photo stop at a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the Kasbah of Aït Ben Haddou. From here, you can capture stunning pictures of this incredible UNESCO World Heritage site, a fortified city famous as a filming location for epic movies and series like Gladiator and Game of Thrones.

We will continue our journey east, passing through Ouarzazate and along the “Road of a Thousand Kasbahs,” with a stop for lunch at a convenient location. The drive continues through the pre-desert landscapes, and as the afternoon progresses, you will see the first golden dunes of the Erg Chebbi appear on the horizon.

Upon arrival in Merzouga, you will immediately meet your camel caravan. You will embark on your unforgettable sunset camel trek across the dunes to our luxury desert camp. After settling into your private tent, a delicious Moroccan dinner will be served, followed by an evening of traditional Berber music around a campfire under the vast, starry sky.

Accommodation: Madu Luxury Camp

Day 2: Merzouga → Ziz Valley → Middle Atlas → Fes

Approximate Driving Time: 7 Hours

An early wake-up is essential to witness the breathtaking beauty of a Sahara sunrise over the dunes. After breakfast at the camp, you will have a short camel ride back to meet your driver, and our journey north to Fes begins promptly.

We will travel through the impressive Ziz Valley, with a short stop at a panoramic viewpoint to admire the vast oasis of palm groves. Our route then takes us up into the Middle Atlas Mountains. We will drive through the famous Cedar Forest near Azrou, making a brief stop to see the native Barbary apes.

After a lunch stop en route, our final stop before Fes is a quick break in the unique alpine-style town of Ifrane. We expect to arrive in the ancient city of Fes in the early evening, where your guide will drop you off at your accommodation, concluding your whirlwind cross-country adventure.

Why Marrakech to Fes Desert Tour 2 Days?

This tour is a feat of logistics, designed for one specific type of traveler: the one who is extremely short on time but absolutely refuses to miss the magic of the Sahara. It is an intense, fast-paced journey, and it is not for everyone. Here’s why you might choose this whirlwind adventure:

  • This is, without question, the fastest possible way to travel from Marrakech to Fes while including an overnight experience in the Erg Chebbi dunes. It combines two full days of travel and a desert adventure into a single, non-stop 48-hour itinerary. If your schedule is your biggest constraint, this is your only option.
  • This tour replaces a boring travel day (by bus, train, or plane) with an incredible adventure. It acts as your private, door-to-door transfer from your riad in Marrakech directly to your riad in Fes, with the bonus of a Sahara dream in the middle.

What to pack

  • Comfortable Travel Clothes: You will be spending a lot of time in the vehicle, so wear something comfortable for the long drive.
  • A Warm Jacket or Fleece: This is non-negotiable. The desert gets very cold at night, and you will need a warm layer for the evening at the camp.
  • A Scarf or Headwrap: Highly recommended for protecting you from the sun and sand during your camel trek.
  • Comfortable, Easy-to-Remove Shoes: Trainers or similar comfortable shoes are perfect.
  • A Small Overnight Bag: This is crucial. Pack a small backpack or day bag with only what you need for the night in the desert: a change of clothes for the next day, toiletries, and any medications. Your main luggage will stay securely in the vehicle.
  • Sun Protection: Even on a quick trip, the sun is powerful. Bring sunglasses and sunscreen.
  • Camera & Power Bank: You’ll want to capture the sunset and sunrise. A portable power bank is essential to keep your phone charged.
  • Cash (Moroccan Dirhams): For your two lunches, drinks, and snacks along the road.

Accommodations:

Nestled in a quiet, secluded area of the Erg Chebbi dunes, Madu Luxury Camp offers a level of style and comfort that is truly special. After a long day of travel and your breathtaking sunset camel trek, arriving at this elegant, black-tented encampment feels like discovering a true oasis.

We chose this camp for its exceptional quality, beautiful design, and warm Berber hospitality. It ensures that your brief but precious time in the Sahara is a five-star experience.

  • Tent Type: Your own spacious and private luxury tent with a king-sized bed.
  • Facilities: Each private tent features its own ensuite bathroom with a modern flush toilet and a hot-water shower.
  • Atmosphere: Magical, elegant, and an unforgettable immersion into the tranquility of the Sahara.

Good to Know

  • This Tour Involves Very Long Driving Hours: We cannot stress this enough. This is a “road trip” style tour focused on covering a vast distance. You will spend approximately 10 hours driving on Day 1 and 8 hours on Day 2. The beauty of the landscape is primarily seen from the comfort of your private vehicle.
  • Aït Ben Haddou is Seen, Not Visited: To reach the desert in time for sunset, our stop for the Kasbah of Aït Ben Haddou is for panoramic photos from a viewpoint only. There is no time included for a guided tour or to walk inside the village on this express itinerary.
  • Who This Tour is For: This tour is designed for travelers who are extremely short on time, have good stamina for long drives, and whose primary goal is to experience a night in the Erg Chebbi dunes while transferring from Marrakech to Fes.
  • Who This Tour is NOT For: This tour is not recommended for families with young children, senior travelers, or anyone who prefers a relaxed pace with time for leisurely exploration. We strongly and wholeheartedly recommend choosing a longer journey. Our 3-Day Marrakech to Fes Desert Tour offers a much more comfortable pace with time for in-depth visits. Our 4-Day Marrakech to Fes Desert Tour is even better, providing an extra day to truly relax and admire the Sahara.

This 2-day tour from Marrakech to Fes is absolutely amazing, and it was exactly what we needed. Be prepared for a LOT of driving, but the payoff is 100% worth it. Our guide, Hassan, was an amazing driver and host. To wake up in Marrakech one morning and in the Sahara the next is just incredible. The night at Madu Luxury Camp was magical, and we still got to do the sunset camel trek. If you are extremely short on time but refuse to miss the desert, this is the perfect Sahara tour. Thank you, Morocco Glory Travel, for making it possible!

We only had a week in Morocco and had to get from Marrakech to Fes. This 2-day desert tour was the most brilliant and efficient solution. The team at Morocco Glory Travel was very honest about the long hours, so we knew what to expect. The private 4x4 was comfortable, and our driver, Omar, was fantastic. Seeing the sunrise over the dunes before heading to Fes was a memory we will never forget. It's a fast-paced road trip, not a leisurely tour, and it was perfect for our tight schedule. Highly recommend for savvy travelers.

This 2-day tour is an incredible feat of logistics, and it was only possible because of our amazing guide, Ibrahim. He was a phenomenal driver, navigating the long roads safely and professionally. He knew exactly where to stop for the best quick photos and made sure we got to the desert in time for the magical sunset camel trek. The night at Madu Luxury Camp was a dream. This is a fast-paced journey, but Morocco Glory Travel and their expert guides make it a seamless and unforgettable experience.
