Day 3: Dades Valley → Todra Gorge → Merzouga Desert → Luxury Camp

After a peaceful breakfast, we continue our journey towards the Sahara. Our first stop is the towering Todra Gorge. You will have ample time to walk along the river at the base of the 300-meter cliffs, a truly spectacular sight.

As we travel onward, the landscape begins to change, becoming more arid as we approach the desert. By late afternoon, we will arrive at the edge of the Sahara in Merzouga. Here, your unforgettable camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes begins. Your camel guide will lead you into the golden sands, stopping at a high dune to witness a breathtaking sunset. From there, our path takes us through the magnificent Draa Valley, Morocco’s longest river valley. This is a stunning ribbon of life, a vast oasis lined with millions of palm trees and ancient kasbahs. We will take our time driving through this beautiful landscape, making stops to admire the views of the historic caravan route. Why Marrakech Itinerary 7 Days?

This is more than just a tour; it is the definitive story of Southern Morocco. We crafted this 7-day journey for the traveler who wants to go deeper and truly connect with our home. It is built around the luxury of time, allowing you to experience everything at a relaxed, unhurried pace.

The extra days completely transform the adventure. With two full nights in the Sahara, you go far beyond a simple visit. You will have a full day for our 4×4 adventure to meet real nomadic families and listen to the spiritual sounds of Gnaoua music, a profound cultural experience that shorter tours simply cannot offer.

This itinerary also tells a more complete story of the south. You will travel to the desert through the dramatic, rocky landscapes of the Dades Valley, and return along a different path through the vast, lush palm groves of the historic Draa Valley. You get to see both iconic landscapes without backtracking.

Ultimately, this journey is about connection. For seven full days, your guide is not just a driver; they are your personal Berber host. This week-long shared experience allows for a genuine bond to form, turning a great trip into a profound and unforgettable memory.

What to pack:

  • Think in Layers: The secret to enjoying Morocco’s changing landscapes is layering. A few t-shirts, a couple of long-sleeved shirts, and a warm fleece or jacket are perfect. This way, you’re ready for a cool mountain morning, a warm afternoon sun, and a cold desert night.
  • Your Best Walking Shoes: This is a journey of discovery, and your feet will be your best friends. A pair of comfortable, broken-in trainers or walking shoes is essential for exploring the ancient alleys of Aït Ben Haddou and the paths of the Todra Gorge.
  • A Traveler’s Best Friend (A Scarf): We cannot recommend this enough. A simple scarf (what we call a ‘cheche’) is the most useful thing you can pack. It will shield you from the sun on your camel trek, keep you warm when the desert temperature drops, and is a beautiful accessory.
  • Your Camera & a Power Bank: You will want to capture everything. From the light on the dunes to the smiles of the people you meet, there are a thousand photos waiting to be taken. A power bank is crucial to make sure you never miss a moment.
  • A Small Daypack: This will be your constant companion. Use it to carry your water, sunscreen, and camera during the day. It’s also what you’ll pack with your overnight essentials for your magical night at the desert camp.
  • Swimwear for a Desert Oasis: Don’t forget your swimsuit! The pool at your Riad in Merzouga, with views of the dunes, is the perfect place to relax and cool off after your 4×4 adventure.
  • Sun Protection is Key: The Moroccan sun is strong and beautiful. A good sun hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen are non-negotiable.
  • Bring Some Cash: While your main expenses are covered, you’ll want some Moroccan Dirhams for the delicious lunches we’ll stop for, for drinks, and for any beautiful handicrafts you might fall in love with along the way.

Yes, this is our most recommended tour for families. The shorter driving days and the full day of activities in the desert (with access to a swimming pool) make it much more comfortable and enjoyable for children of all ages.

For this longer, more in-depth tour, we recommend booking at least 4 to 6 months in advance, especially during the high season (September-November and March-May), to ensure the best availability for all our hand-picked accommodations.

While there are many incredible sights, most travelers would agree that the Sahara Desert, with its golden Erg Chebbi dunes, is the most unique and unforgettable attraction. The magical experience of a sunset camel trek and a night under the stars is truly a once-in-a-lifetime memory.
